Vintage Cars: still me W126 complete drive train swap, welding torch, gear ratios

I'm seeing the 420 as a mid-size prestigue ride
    Car      $  800.
    Engine $1100. New rebuild
    Trans.  $1200. New rebuild
    Labor.  $1000
    RearEd$ 400
    Cosm.  $2000 paint & upls
   -----------------------
    Total    $7000 With car

All said I hope I'm not so vain to have this built unless I can get 20 MPG city
driving.

Here is what some of my contacts tell me, ( BTW - most think it a bit unusual and don't recommend the mod.)
that said,
(1)with enough money and someone very good and inventive with a welding torch anything is possible.
(2)Corvette and jag rears  have been used in 450SL's . I believe the 420SEL may already have the same large rear as the 560SL but in any case staying with MB rears would probably be the easiest mods.
(3)The only reason I would consider deviating from MB rears ends is to get better flexibility of gear ratios at a reasonable cost.
