Vintage Cars: 1970 mercury convertible, production numbers, cougar

Question
I once had a convertible book in which I lost, that stated that in 1970 Mercury decided to continue to make the Montery convertible(gigantic wheel based convertible) and only produced 581 of them and quit. Is this true???

Answer
You're absolutely right.  1970 was not a great year for Mercury ragtops; all models saw low production numbers.  Only 1233 Marquis convertibles, and just 1997 Cougar XR-7 convertibles.  You wonder why they even bothered.  For 1971, the only Mercury convertible left was the Cougar, and they built about 3400 of those, both base and XR-7 models.
