Vintage Cars: Removing old gas, gas tank, sludge


Question
What is the best way to remove old gas from gas tank. Concerned about sludge at bottom of tank.

Answer
If there is a lot of gas, then siphon or suction it out.

If not much, and you plan on pulling the tank to clean it (can't really clean it otherwise) then just pull the tank, up to about 5 gallons isn't a problem, just plug the fill tube so it doesn't spill as you pull the tank down .

Once down you can take out the sending unit and see inside to check for rust.  If it is rusty, then  there are products to clean and coat the tank.
