Vintage Cars: Chev Small block identification, bbl carb, suffix code

Question
QUESTION: Hi Don, I am also on all experts under: http://www.allexperts.com/ep/682-16/Collectibles-General-Antiques/Rodger-Knutson

Anyway, I was wondering if you could help:
I am trying to figure out my Chevy small block number, can you help me with it? The Block number is stamped T052IHN, and also stamped on the front pad is 18L161482. Trying to find out everything I can about this engine but not having a lot of luck. I was told once a long time ago that it was a 327, 365 horse, out of a corvette with fuel injection, which would be wonderful if it were true, but I want to know what it is. Thank You for any help on it! This engine is in my 1963 Chev SS convertable and I know it's not the original motor.

ANSWER: You are almost right.

According to my research, your engine is a 1968 327 from a full size car with a Powerglide.

If it was a 1965 it could be a 375 FI block.

Casting codes will tell for sure, but the numbers translate as:

T=Tonawanda plant
05 May
21 (not 2I) is 21st day
HN is used for 65, 68 and 69 year engines.

the Vin number translates:
the 8 means 1968

You only wish! The suffix code HM was used for that engine in a 1965 Corvette but your engine if from a 1968 Impala or other full size Chevy car. The CON VIN is proof of the engines heritage, it was stamped in the final assembly plant just before it was dropped into the chassis of the big Chevy car at Los Angeles GMAD plant. Sorry, no Vette engine.<end>

Don, maybe just one more question ruarding this, after looking at the link for serial numbers and your information I can see why it was mistaken as a 365 hp vette, I thought it was ihn, but looks like you figured it out, it was 1HN, I'll have to look at it the engine number again. Being a old fart I miss my 20-20 eyes! Question, being a 1968 Chev, did this engine then have a quadrajet 4 bbl with the larger rear carburetor port plates in 1968? It has a 4 jet carburetor where all the port plates were all the same size now, most likely from the original engine, but I think this was the early 64 carburetor and intake manifold. Is there much of a difference? Maybe I should put the larger intake manifold, and a ROCHESTER QUADRAJET with the larger rear ports on it.
Thank you again for being so helpful on this! I would still like to find a good set of 202 heads for it, have a set?, drop me a line.
Sincerely
Rodger

Answer
SO I was right, or at least that group backs up what I told you.

As to the intake, I am not sure what it came with, but since it is in a car it wasn't intended for, and mods are not an issue, I would not worry about the carb.  It is a 327 and they can take most modern carbs.  I like the Edelbrock AFB look-alike as they are very much like what would have come on it.

Check with an outfit like JEGS or SUMMIT RACING, they have lots of combinations you can buy.  OR buy some of the many good books on building Chevy Small Block engines.  If concerned about corretness, you want to put on what would have been correct for the car it is in now, not what it had in the full size car it was in originally.
