Vintage Cars: alternate vin locations, vehicle id number, mg roadster

Question
I recently bought a 1951 MG roadster and tried to do a title transfer today at the DMV.  Upon vehicle inspection, the DMV clerk said the vehicle ID number on the title did not match the number on the metal plate on the tool box.  The two letters matched, but the four numbers on the title were the four numbers on the engine number on the metal plate.  Which set of letters and numbers do I refer to for the actual vehicle ID number?  On the title it has the two letters of the auto number and the four numbers for the engine number.

Answer
I honestly don't know, as I'm just not that familiar with non-U.S. produced vehicles.  BUT- the folks at this website will do their best to help:

Click on the "contact us" at the top-right box of the screen, and ask your question there.  This is one of the best-organized MG clubs in the country, and I've found the folks there to be quite helpful.
