Vintage Cars: replacement vin tag, corvette forums, cowl tag

Question
Hi Don,  I have a 57 convertible that has the cowl tag, but does not have the vin tag in the drivers door jam.  Can I get a replacement?

Answer
Chances are your vin tag is now on another car that is not really legal.  You may have problems with this in the future.

I found some Corvette forums where people had gotten a state issued tag that used the original VIN number, I imagine that there could be a state issued VIN number too.

I think that if you have a solid frame, that the VIN is stamped on the frame on the drivers side near the firewall, but I am not sure if it is on the side or the top of the frame.

Check with your DMV, Sec of State or State Police on what the procedure is in your state for re-tagging the VIN on your car.  I am sure you will have to provide proof of it's original VIN (thus the frame number is important) and proof of legal ownership.
