Vintage Cars: 250 Ferrari GTO, history of ferrari, kind car

Question
Can you explain why some GTOs have 2 vents in the side while others have 3?  Is it the year?  I hear only 39 were made from 1962-1964.  Thanks.

Answer
The answer could be as complex as the history of Ferrari itself.  You must remember that nearly every Ferrari built before the late 60s- early 70s is a handbuilt, one-of-a-kind-car; no two of any one model, in any one year, are exactly alike.  Some of the bodies were made for Ferrari by small, outside coachbuilding firms, which led to variations.  I've seen '62 GTOs with both 2 and 3 vents in the front fenders.  Also, the GTO was first and foremost a race car, so perhaps the extra vents were added after they found a need for more air under the hood and/or around the brakes under competition situations.  And yes, somewhere between 30 and 40 were made, although many more than that have survived today... ;)
