Vintage Cars: Asking price, pontiac laurentian, visible rust

Question
Jeff
I own a 1964 Pontiac Laurentian,four door standard,230.
It is not a show car,but it does run OK,everything works.
When it is clean, from a distance it looks great.
There is a bit of visible rust and the seats have some rips.
I dont want to spend the bucks for a complete restore,in fact I might sell.
I have no idea what to ask.
I have seen the same car,as a 'parts car' with asking price of up to a thou, and ten thou for a complete resto.
What do you think?

Answer
I assume by "four door standard, 230" you mean this is a 4-door sedan with a manual transmission and six-cylinder engine, correct?  And "When it is clean, from a distance it looks great...," is what we veterans refer to as a "20-footer (from 20 feet it looks nice, but get up close...). Those in the market are looking for ultra-clean original or perfectly-restored V8 convertibles or hardtops.  I'm trying to find a nice way to say that what you have is the least desirable to a purchaser in the current marketplace.  Now, there may be someone out there that will find the combo of a 6-cylinder/ manual tranny in a full-sized 60's Pontiac intriguing, but they still won't be willing to pay you much.  From your description, I'd say it would bring at least $1,000.00, but I doubt you'd get much more than $3,000, certainly not $4,000.  If it only had just ONE desirable trait (convertible, or perfect condition, or a V8, or a Parisienne), it would be a different story.  This is the perfect example of supply and demand driving the market; the supply of '64 Laurentians is low, but the demand for you car is even lower, resulting in the low value.  If you were to keep it, you at least have the satisfaction of a solid-running, good-looking car- I personally feel the '64-'66 full-sized Pontiacs were among the best-styled cars ever made.
