Michigan Attorneys Publish Insurer Guide

Looking for a Michigan auto insurer that will do right by you after you’re involved in a serious accident? Well a group of Michigan attorneys called Michigan Auto Law has just published an online guide that may be just the thing you’re looking for.

The attorney group has put together rankings for major insurers in the state based on information from state regulators, company-specific customer-satisfaction surveys, and their own experience representing clients in court.

The guide is not definitive, but it does provide advice from professionals who have had a lot of experience dealing with insurance companies, which could be useful for consumers looking to learn more about a particular coverage provider.

“For nearly 20 years, I have sued almost every insurance company in America,” attorney Steven Gursten says in the guide. “I am an insurance attorney who has spent his entire career helping people who have been seriously injured in automobile accidents.”

The report details the top four best auto insurance companies along with the top six worst auto insurance companies (plus two “dishonorable mentions”).

Also included are more in-depth looks into court cases involving the eight worst companies that, according to the attorneys, exemplify why they’re ranked toward the bottom of the pack. Some of the court cases are ones in which the Michigan Auto Law attorneys actually represented clients, while others weren’t even regarding cases in Michigan.

It’s not clear if the same criteria were used to rank all of the insurers, since the amount of information given in the list for each insurer varies.

For example, the section about the No. 1-ranked company includes information about how it ranked in J.D. Power’s consumer surveys, its rating from Consumer Reports, information about how much of its premium dollars went to claims, price information, and consumer-complaint info. But for the No. 4-ranked company, there is only a sentence saying that it “has consistently been one of the least-complained-about auto insurers in Michigan for the last five years.”

The following is the attorney group’s best and worst lists. Rather than using it solely to make your decision on which company to get insurance from, make sure to read the guide’s explanation of why they ended up ranking how they ranked. Also, before purchasing coverage from a company, it’s worthwhile to check J.D. Power rankings and consumer-complaint reports on your own and to ask friends and family about their own experiences with insurers in your state.
