Illinois Raising Minimum Auto Insurance

According to an article in the Chicago Tribune, Illinois may be raising their minimum required auto insurance. Illinois motorists who carry only the minimum insurance required by law might find themselves paying more for premiums starting in 2015.

“The Illinois House passed legislation over the weekend that would raise the minimum liability coverage – insurance that helps pay for injuries to others – to $25,000 for injury or death to one person, up from $20,000. It would also increase minimum coverage to $50,000 for injury or death of two people, up from $40,000. One legislature estimates that for people currently carrying the minimum insurance, it would cost them an extra $75 a year.”

At SafeAuto, because we offer minimum state coverage car insurance, we are always on top of legislation such as this. This limit level is becoming the standard for minimum limits. The Illinois lawmakers are doing well to ensure that the limits are not lagging behind while keeping a keen eye on cost and financial pressures their constituents are facing.

Current SafeAuto customers in Illinois don’t have to worry right now about the limit increase because the law won’t go into effect until 2015. Currently, the minimum amount of liability insurance coverage required to satisfy the Illinois Financial Responsibility law is 20,000/40,000/15,000.
