Mercedes-Benz 229.5 engine oil is specially created for fuel economy and is designed to allow drivers to wait longer between oil changes. The 229.5 is specifically for vehicles manufactured from 2002 and later because these vehicles are equipped with service indicator lights.
For model year 2005 or later vehicles with M112, M113, M272 or M273 engines, MB 229.5 engine oils must be used with a fleece oil filter. Use paper filters in all other models.
Owners of vehicles with a Mercedes Maintenance System beginning in model year 2005 can use 229.51 oils instead of 229.5.
MB 229.5 oil includes dozens of varieties from brand names like Castrol, Valvoline, Shell, Quaker State and Pennzoil.
