How to Inspect a Used Car

Used cars can be a great deal for buyers on a budget. In addition to researching how much you should pay for a used car and checking out the Carfax report, you should also know how to inspect a used car before buying.

Always inspect a car during daylight hours. If the seller is only available at night, you should probably keep looking elsewhere. When inspecting the outside of the vehicle, look for signs of rust. Although some sellers might try to hide rust with paint, you should be able to tell if the car has body damage. Don’t forget to check the wheel wells. Also look for scratches and dings on the vehicle. The location of dents might hint at the location of damage from a major accident.

Next you should look at the tires. Is there enough tread on the tires to pass inspection? Is the wear on the tires even? Does the seller have the receipt to show when the tires were purchased? Depending on the vehicle, tires can be a large investment. If the tires are old and worn out, negotiate a lower price.

Don’t forget to check the function of the doors and trunk. Before you go for a test drive open the trunk and make sure the mechanisms work properly. Open all of the doors and make sure they do not hang up or screech. Sit in the car and try the power windows and door locks. Turn on the lights and check the turn signals. Check the dash and make sure the radio works and the electronics do not look tampered with.

When inspecting the engine compartment check for oil or other fluid leaks. Do the belts look worn or ready to break? Check the oil, the transmission fluid, and the antifreeze compartment. Overall does the engine look clean? Start the car and listen to the engine and fan. If the car is making strange noises, you either need to have a mechanic look over the car or find another deal.

When shopping for a used car you should print out a checklist to help you remember to check all of the important details, thoroughly inspecting the car before handing over any of your hard earned money.
