How to Open Trailer Doors Safely

Trucks, or tractor-trailers, transport large loads of materials across the nation's roads and highways, and a transport worker's job doesn't just include following the rules of the road. Safety is also vital when loading and unloading the contents of the trailers, as some loads can shift and become unstable during transport. Although uncommon, accidents do happen. Fortunately, most accidents can be prevented by following a few basic steps when opening a truck's trailer doors.

  • Park on level ground before attempting to open the trailer doors. Parking downhill is dangerous and could cause any unsecured loads to roll out of the truck.

  • Perform a visual inspection to ensure that the area around the doors and behind the truck is completely clear of any people or obstructions. Many trucking companies provide flags or warning signs that you place put near the truck to dictate a clear zone.

  • Unlatch and open one door rather than both at the same time if the trailer has two doors. This way, if a load is not secure, it will be partially blocked by the other closed door. Opening one door also allows you to check inside the trailer and evaluate whether or not the contents have shifted.

  • Stand to the side as you open the trailer doors; never stand directly in front of the trailer. Pulling the door with you as you step back and to the side will keep you out of the path of any falling materials. Doing this will also allow you to use the door as a shield to block any falling objects.
