How to Install a Child Seat in a Chevrolet Colorado With an Extended Cab

The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control cites automobile accidents as the number one killer of children in the United States. Research completed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, shows that improperly installed infant car seats are a significant factor affecting these figures, estimating that up to 80 percent of all child car safety seats are improperly installed. To help keep your passengers safe, the Chevrolet Colorado Extended cab features an anchor latch system that makes it easy to install a child safety seat.

  • Locate the two lower seating anchors in the car, at the base of the seat where it meets the seat back. Then locate the anchor loop at the top of the seat back and the top tether anchor in the center of the two seats, above the center console. The Colorado extended cab is equipped with identical anchors on both of the rear seats.

  • Place the child seat onto the desired rear seat. Locate the hook at the end of the belt for the left side of the lower restraint on the child seat. Place the hook over the left lower anchor on the Colorado's seat, then push the hook onto the anchor to snap the safety clip shut.

  • Reach around to the right side of the child seat and snap the hook on other end of the child seat's lower restraint belt, onto the anchor on the right side of the Colorado's seat, as above. Pull the loose end of the belt to tighten the adjuster. After the belt is tightened, you should not be able to move the seat more than 1 inch from side to side.

  • Take the hook at the end of the child seat's top tether belt, and feed it through the loop at the top of the seat back in the Colorado. Attach the tether belt's hook to the hook above the car's rear center console. Use the hook nearest the seat you are using. Pull the loose end of the belt to tighten the adjuster. When the belt is tightened, you should not be able to move the seat forward by more than 1 inch.

  • Check the security of the attachments by moving the seat from side to side and forward and back.
