How to Drive in Thunderstorms

For some, thunderstorms, even with rain and lightening, are an awe inspiring force of nature; for others, they are terrifying events. However, driving in them can be tricky, even for the experienced motorist.

Things You'll Need

  • Car
  • Working radio
  • Turn on your car or other radio to any channel giving the weather report. This way you can stay on top of just where the storm is going to hit.

  • Turn your headlights on low, so you can be seen, and slow down your car.

  • Make sure there is extra distance between you and the car in front of you for braking purposes.

  • Pull over to the side of the road and put on your hazard lights so other cars will know you are there when the thunderstorm produces extremely heavy rains.

  • Stay in your car when lightening, which is normally part of the thunderstorm, begins to flash across the sky. Being in a car gives you better protection than being out in the open since the car is grounded by the wheels.
