How to Feel Relaxed for a Driving Test

Passing a driving test to get a driver's license is a big milestone in most people's lives, especially for teenagers. The driving test itself can be stressful. Keeping your calm and taking your time can help you remain relaxed.

Things You'll Need

  • Driver's education handbook
  • Practice driving as much as you can before you schedule your driving test. Become comfortable driving in snow and rain as well as in dry weather. Apply for a test date only when you feel confident that you will pass the test.

  • Review the rules of the road as stated in your state's driver's handbook. When you know all of the driving laws inside out, you are more likely to feel relaxed during the road test.

  • Schedule your driver's license road test for early in the day, if possible, so you will not stress out about it all day long. If you have a late-afternoon test time, try to keep yourself busy with other activities during most of the day to keep yourself from needless worry.

  • Refrain from discussing your driving test date with your friends if they are more interested in telling you horror stories than helping you feel relaxed. Share the good news with them after you have received your driver's license.

  • Dress in comfortable clothing that will not restrict your movement during the driving test. Small details like a tight collar on a shirt may not bother you on any other day but could annoy you if you are not feeling relaxed.

  • Eat a small meal or snack before your driving test. You may not feel like eating due to nerves, but you need food to provide you with energy.

  • Arrive at the testing center 10 to 15 minutes early. Give yourself time to check in, use the restroom if needed and take a few deep, relaxing breaths. If you have never visited your motor vehicle branch, call for directions before your test date.

  • Take your time once you get into the car with the instructor who is administering your driving test. Adjust the mirror and seat positions before you start the car so you feel completely comfortable, at least physically.
