How Do You Start a Toyota Prius Hybrid?

Introduced to the American consumer market in August 2000, the Toyota Prius is one of the earliest hybrid vehicle models put into regular production. Although many of the controls, components and creature comforts appear to mirror those of typical non-hybrid vehicles, the starting procedure for the Prius may appear alien or confusing to first-time operators.

Things You'll Need

  • Electronic key

Start Up

  • Sit in the driver's seat and make sure the electronic key is located within close proximity to the dash and console area.

  • Set the parking brake, positioned to the far left corner of the foot well.

  • Press and hold the brake pedal and make sure the “P” button, positioned above the gear selector, is engaged. Ensure the round-shaped “Power” button, located to the left of the stereo controls, lights green.

  • Hit the “Power” button to initiate the hybrid drive system.

  • Wait for the “Ready” message to appear on the dashboard display and hold the brake pedal. Place the gear selector in the desired position and press the parking brake pedal to disengage the parking brake; operate the vehicle in a normal fashion.

Shut Down

  • Bring the vehicle to a complete stop and hold the brake pedal.

  • Engage the parking brake and press the “P” button, located above the gear selector.

  • Hit the “Power” switch and wait for the dash display to turn off.

  • Remove your foot from the brake and ensure the “Power” switch is not illuminated.
