How to Tow With the Mazda 6

The Mazda 6 is midsized 4-door sedan. According to the Mazda 6 owner's manual, the manufacturer does not recommend you tow a trailer, citing possible damage to the vehicle's transmission. If you still want to tow a trailer with your vehicle, there are aftermarket hitch options available. Attaching an aftermarket hitch will void your warranty, so do so at your own risk. Connecting the trailer to your Mazda 6 correctly and checking the lights are important for safety.

  • Calculate the weight of the trailer plus cargo. Since the manufacturer does not recommended you tow a trailer, choose one that is extremely light. A trailer that is less than 1,000 pounds would reduce your odds of damaging the vehicle.

  • Connect the trailer's receiver to the trailer hitch's ball and lock it in place with the latching mechanism. Lock the latch with a hitch pin.

  • Attach the trailer's chains to the hitch's chain mounts. Cross the chains under the coupler.

  • Connect the trailer's 4-way connector to the vehicle's trailer wiring receiver. Test that the trailer brake, signal and marker lights are operational before heading out on the road. These are required by law.

  • Inspect the vehicle and trailer for anything that may prevent a safe trip.
