How to Troubleshoot When a 2006 Impala Headlight Won't Turn Off

Chevrolet Impala vehicles can include daytime running lamps (DRL) coupled with an automatic headlight system on some models. Daytime running lights aid safety by making it easier for other vehicles to see the 2006 Impala during the day. The DRL system turns the headlights on and off under certain running and environmental conditions. Problems with the system can include the lights not turning off.

  • Uncover the DRL's light sensor on the top of the dashboard if the headlights won't turn off. Maps, hats or other items placed on the dash can block correct ambient light readings and cause the full-strength headlights to turn on in full daylight, rather than the less-bright DRL headlights.

  • Turn the exterior light control to a position other than "Auto" if the headlights still won't turn off. The control is the rotary dial to the left of the steering wheel. This setting will override the DRL system. Turning the ignition key to the "Off" position will also turn the DRL headlights off.

  • Wait 10 minutes if you have turned the headlights on while the 2006 Impala is running, then turn the ignition off. The headlights will stay on for 10 minutes. Just wait for them to go off.
