How to Pull a Minivan Behind a Motorhome

Towing a vehicle behind an RV, known as "dinghy towing," has a long history amongst RV enthusiasts, and is one simple way of ensuring RVers have an easy way of getting around town between long RV rides. Minivans allow families and larger groups to travel around towns during longer trips. However, because of their size and construction, minivans require equipment for towing that more traditional sedans don't. With the right equipment and preparation, you can tow most minivans behind an RV.

Things You'll Need

  • Flatbed trailer
  • Ball-mount hitch
  • Wheel blocks
  • Steering wheel clamp
  • Prepare the RV for towing your minivan. Park the RV on a flat, even surface; engage the emergency break, and check to ensure you have enough room to attach the flatbed trailer.

  • Hook the flatbed trailer's receiver up to the RV's ball-mount hitch. The trailer's receiver is the hook or hooking attachment located at the end of the trailer's tongue, or bar that extends from the front of the trailer. If you did not install the ball-mount hitch on your RV, this hitch will be the permanent metal ball-shaped feature that extends from the center of the back of your RV.

  • Bring the flatbed trailer's ramps down to the ground. Check to ensure the ramps are even with and flat against the ground.

  • Drive your minivan onto your flatbed trailer, following the ramps as closely as possible with your minivan's tires.

  • Secure the minivan onto the flatbed trailer. Engage the emergency break, place wheel blocks behind the wheels and install a steering wheel clamp on the steering wheel.

  • Raise the ramps up to their usual location on the flatbed trailer. Check to ensure the ramps are locked into place and secure so they do not disengage on the road.
