How to Use Winterforce Tires in the Summer

Firestone Tires produces a series of winter auto tires marketed as the Winterforce tire. These tires are designed with a rugged tread that shed snow and ice while maintaining stability on the winter road conditions. The tires come stud-ready but are not studded, allowing their use during nonwinter months. It is possible to keep the Winterforce tires on your car during the summer months. If you opt to do so, follow some small protocols to keep them running as long as possible.

Things You'll Need

  • Air compressor or hose
  • Unscrew the air caps on each Winterforce tire on the car with your fingers. Attach the air nozzle from the air compressor and pump the tires to 40 PSI. The recommended winter setting is 35 PSI, but because of the lack of snow you will want to run them at a higher PSI in the dry months to reduce noise and friction on the tire-tread surface.

  • Factor a loss of approximately two miles per gallon on your vehicle's gas mileage because of the more aggressive tread on the dry road conditions. You many need to stop at the gas station a little more frequently with the Winterforce tires installed.

  • Rotate the tires between seasons to prevent uneven erosion on the tire treads. This can be done at a mechanic shop. When you get an oil change, the mechanic shop staff may ask whether you want your tires rotated. Have the staff do so.

  • Drive with the tires in summer as you would with any other tire.
