How to Park a Standard Shift Car

Vehicles with standard or "stick-shift" transmissions require a bit more driving skill than those with automatic transmissions. The driver must manually shift the gears instead of relying on the transmission to automatically complete those actions. Also worth noting is the fact that standard-shift cars do not have a "Park" setting on the gearshift. Instead of shifting the vehicle into "Park," you will have to secure it in another manner.

  • Pull the car into your desired parking space and place your foot on the brake to hold the car in position.

  • Engage your parking brake to keep the car from rolling out of position. Take your foot off the brake.

  • Place the gear shift into the "First" or "Reverse" position, and turn the ignition key off.
