How to Take a Key Off of a Cable Lock Key Ring

Key rings come in a wide variety of styles and sizes. Popular key rings in modern times are detachable key rings, and cable lock key rings. Some cable lock rings have combination locks for added security, others simply fasten together with a latch. Removing or adding a key to a cable lock ring is a simple process.

With Combination lock

  • Dial in the appropriate combination on the combination dial on the key ring.

  • Move the keys to the side of the ring that doesn't open. This will keep them from falling off of the ring completely.

  • Pull the ring out of the hole or slot holding it in place. Some models you may have to pull out while pushing up to remove the ring from the lock.

  • Take the key off of the ring and replace the cable into the locking slot or hole.

Without combination

  • Locate the locking hole or slot on the key ring. This is a small hole usually by a button or latch to keep the cable in place.

  • Move the keys to the side of the ring that doesn't open. This will keep all of the keys from falling off completely.

  • Depress the button or latch locking the cable in place and hold. All models differ slightly in the latch or button placement.

  • Pull out the cable from the slot or hole while depressing the latch or button. The cable should pull right out. Take the key off of the cable and replace.
