How to Change Gears in a Mazda3

Most automatic Mazda3 models are equipped with what's called "manual-shift mode." While in "drive", the transmission works like any other automatic transmission, shifting gears for you as you accelerate and decelerate. However, shifting into manual-shift mode gives the driver most of the freedom to shift gears. Many drivers use this feature to enhance their car's performance, or gain more control of their car by choosing when to upshift and downshift.

  • Turn on your Mazda3. Never shift gears on an automatic when the car is off.

  • Move the shifter to manul-shift mode while the car is on. Tiptronic mode is labeled with an "M" for manual.

  • Upshift by pressing down, or towards the "+", on the shifter. The shift lever will move back to its neutral position on "M" after shifting. Upshifting will move your transmission to a higher gear for higher speed.

  • Downshift by pressing up, or towards the "-", on the shifter. Again, the shift lever will move back to its neutral position on "M". Downshifting moves your transmission to a lower gear, for lower speed.
