How to Install a Racing Seat Belt

Racing safety belts, often referred to as harnesses, are an integral part of safety equipment in car racing. The harnesses provide restraint in an accident and stability during normal driving. A properly installed harness will enhance the safety of the driver.

Things You'll Need

  • Racing harness--4-, 5- or 6-point
  • Hand tools
  • Grade-eight mounting hardware
  • Backing plates
  • Power drill
  • Manufacturer's instructions
  • Racing seat
  • Determine a mounting location that is 2 1/2 inches in front of the seat bottom and back intersection point.

  • Using grade-eight hardware, anchor the lap belts to secure mounting points. If the mounting point uses sheet metal as an anchor, a backing plate is required.

  • Determine the mounting points for the shoulder harnesses that are behind the driver and 1 to 4 inches below shoulder height. The transverse bar of a roll cage is an excellent shoulder mount.

  • Mount the shoulder belts to the mounting point using grade-eight hardware.

  • When using a 5- or 6-point harness, it will be necessary to determine a mounting point for the submarine belt. This mounting point should be under the driver's seat to allow the lap belts to remain in the proper position over the pelvis.

  • Mount the submarine harness to the vehicle floor using grade-eight hardware and a backing plate.

  • With the driver in the vehicle, adjust the belt lengths to fit properly.
