The Texas Department of Public Safety manages the driving records for the state. It also awards and renews driver’s licenses, oversees vehicle registrations and administers driving programs. You can look up driving records and traffic violations online or through the mail.
Texas offers four types of driving records. Type 1 shows date of birth, license status, home address and date of original license application. Type 2 provides everything Type 1 does, as well as all crashes where a ticket was issued, and moving and nonmoving violations from last three years. Type 3 adds data on all crashes, both ticketed and non-ticketed. The fourth type is a Certified Abstract of Driving Record, called Type AR, which includes a person's entire driving history. You can also get certified versions of Types 2 and 3.
From the Texas Department of Public Safety Driver License webpage, click on the “Order Now” button. Enter your driver’s license number, date of birth, the last four digits of your Social Security number and the DPS Audit number found on your license. Choose the type of record you want and enter the payment information to receive a PDF of the driving record that you can print. You may only request your own driving record through this method.
You also can request your record or another person’s record through the mail. From the Texas Driver License website, print out the Application for Copy of Driver Record if you want record Type 1, 2 and 3. Print out the Request for a Certified Abstract of a Driver Record if you want Type AR. Indicate the specific record you want and fill in where you want the record sent. Include the name, driver's license number and date of birth of the person whose record you are requesting. If looking up another person’s record, you must have him provide written consent by signing the form. Send cash or money order along with the completed form to the address provided.
