Oregon Hit and Run Laws

In Oregon, it is illegal to leave the scene of an accident without stopping. As a driver, your duty is to remain at the location, and assist as needed. If you don't, the penalties under Oregon law can be severe. ORS 811.705 outlines the duties of a driver when someone is injured:
- Immediately stop the vehicle at the scene or as close as safely possible.
- Stay at the scene until all your responsibilities (see below) are fulfilled.
- Give your details to the other driver(s), and anyone who was injured.
- Show evidence, if needed, of your driving privileges.
- Help anyone who has been injured as much as possible.
- Stay at the scene until police arrive, give them all the information they need. If the police do not arrive, inform them of any damages or injuries later.

ORS 811.700 outlines the duties of a driver is only property is damaged:

- Stop at the scene, again doing so safely so you don't obstruct traffic if possible.
- Give other driver your information.
- If you've hit an unoccupied vehicle, make every effort to locate them or notify them of the accident and leave your information.
- If you've damaged other property, make every effort to notify the owner and give them your information.

Penalties

If you don't follow the guidelines above, you can be subject (under ORS 811.706) to fines, and even jail time, in addition to the money you will owe for damages.
