Motorhome Full-Timer: Stacy Westfall’s Home on Wheels

The call of the open road and a taste for adventure–many people wish they could live the nomadic lifestyle of a motorhome “full-timer:” in other words, someone who lives and travels in his or her RV full-time. For most, however, this is only a dream. Work, school and family tie them to one place. Other people, however, turn that dream into a reality. They work and educate in their home-on-wheels. They take their family with them.

Living as a Full-Timer

In 2015, Stacy Westfall’s family sold their house and moved into a brand-new 42-foot Fleetwood Discovery Coach. After minimizing their possessions, the family of five found that their new accommodations had more than enough space for their belongings, and room to spare. Adding to the space, a three-horse trailer, for the family’s two horses, is towed behind.

The Westfall children are homeschooled, to allow the family freedom to travel. Helping with the horses, exploring the surrounding areas, and working on educational projects in nature, ensures they get plenty of fresh air. Also, RV campgrounds provide them with recreation areas, clubhouses and sometimes, pools for entertainment.

Introducing the Fleetwood Discovery

The Fleetwood Discovery is a Class A coach with a diesel engine. It has a towing capacity up to 10,000 pounds, which makes it perfect for pulling the Westfall family’s three-horse trailer. At 42-feet with a full underneath storage bay, it has abundant room for all necessary extras, such as tools, accessories and off-season clothing.

The coach features a 120V/12V, AC/DC converter and a 2,000-watt pure sine wave inverter with a remote. It requires 50-amp service when shoring, but is equipped with an 8.0 KW Onan®Quiet Diesel Generator for boondocking. This provides the family with ultimate versatility.

Exterior Features

The exterior of the Fleetwood Discovery has fiberglass front and rear caps, front quarter panels, wheel well trims and a molded fiberglass roof. It has full-body paint, available in one of three color-schemes: “Autumn Pecan,” “Times Square,” and “Vintage Stone.” The Westfall family chose “Autumn Pecan.”

Additional features include: dual-pane windows with screens, a drooled patio receptacle and a rear rock guard. Weather Pro power awnings, awning rails and drip moldings are present on both sides. The Patio awning even includes a wind sensor to protect it from damage. There is also an automatic leveler.

Abundant Storage

Underneath storage units ensure that there is plenty of room to stow things out of the way. These are perfect for items that are used outside, like collapsible patio furniture or ladders, as well as other items that aren’t used often.

Interior Floor Plan and Design

This floor plan diagram demonstrates just how spacious and accommodating the design of the Discovery is. Living space is conveniently organized. The seating is divided into a wrap-around booth for dining, and a pull out sofa.

The spacious bathroom is accessible from the master bedroom, second bedroom and primary living area independently.

Interior Features

The roomy interior boasts an 84-inch ceiling height with crown molding. Manual double-roller shades make letting in natural light a breeze, and a central vacuum system makes cleanup easy. Dual furnaces, a dual roof-mounted, high-efficiency A/C system with a solar panel and a bedroom heat pump ensure comfort in any temperature. The hardwood cabinet doors and drawers add luxury and value throughout.

Washer and Dryer

The convenience of a stack-able washer and dryer is made possible with a complete PEX plumbing system and on-demand water pump. The water heater has a 16-gallon output and there is also a water heater bypass. A premium water-filtration system provides the best quality water to every faucet in the coach.

Living Room

The wall-to-wall, high-gloss porcelain flooring makes keeping the living room clean particularly easy. Wall sconces and the residential-style seating provide a homey feel to the space. An optional feature of this model is a built-in fireplace.

Dining Area

There are five, large Sony LED HDTVs, as well as a Sony 5.1 home theater system with built-in AM/FM, a DVD player and surround-sound speakers in the room. It has a TV antenna as a backup.

Bedrooms

The sleeping areas are divided into two rooms. The master bedroom is occupied by a king-sized bed and beautiful hardwood cabinetry is featured throughout the interior, by way of a rear-lighted wardrobe, with cedar lining and overhead cabinets in the slide-out. Recessed lighting and full-length mirrors allude to a roominess that really opens it up.

For convenience, there is a remote generator start switch. A Sony 32-inch LED HDTV–one of five–provides evening entertainment. Plus, an optional second sink is offered in this model for greater versatility. Twin Bunks

Twin Bunks

There is a bunk-bed in the second bedroom, to provide accommodations for the greatest number of occupants, with the least amount of floor space used. A flip-down television, in each bunk, is great for individual recreation, for motorhome full-timers.

Kitchen

Since Stacy’s family tows their horse trailer, they have no second vehicle at their disposal. This makes it difficult (to impossible) to dine at restaurants. Luckily, the Discovery has a full kitchen with a 12.2-cubic-foot, 4-door refrigerator, complete with an ice-maker and a water dispenser. The stove consists of a 3-burner, high-output range with sealed burners, an oven and a power roof vent.

Several of the solid, hardwood cabinets offer adjustable shelves. Also, the solid-surface counter-top features a flip-up extension for additional counter space. The faucet for the kitchen sink has a pull-out sprayer for convenient cleaning, and the wastebasket is underneath.

In this video, Stacy Westfall provides a virtual tour of her home. She discusses her favorite features and interviews her family about their favorites.

In conclusion

The Westfall family simplified their lives and made their dreams come true, by selling their traditional house and taking to the road in their home-on-wheels. With their shared experiences, according to the video, they have never been closer. With some research, and a modified mind-set, full-time RV living can be a reality for anyone.
