Although I find the interior of Infiniti's M-series a bit lacking compared with luxury competitors, it makes up for its shortcomings through a well engineered engine and chassis. The M35X's steering somehow makes it feel much lighter and more nimble. As for the 275-hp 3.5-liter V-6, it feels rather sluggish when driven conservatively but will really come alive in manual shift mode. Driving-wise, this car blows the doors off the Lexus GS350 AWD, so I can deal with a little less luxury inside.

I find this a difficult segment, and almost none of the entries appeal to me. The 5-series interior and exterior styling are cold and withdrawn. The E-class' ride and handling is too cushy, and the STS is ho-hum, which brings me to the M. The exterior and interior styling are attractive and inviting. The added weight and loss of fuel economy makes all-wheel drive hard to justify, not to mention no longer being able to do the occasional burnout. Even living in Michigan, I would rather forego all-wheel drive for snow tires and rear-drive.

The Infiniti is less expensive and you get more options for the money than most of its competition, but I can't get a manual transmission. For that reason alone, I think I'd still buy a 5-series over the M.
