ERIK JOHNSON

Special editions are usually pretty neat, and Volkswagen is one company that usually gets them right. But this Fahrenheit doesn't make sense to me. The yellow paint isn't that dynamic—word is the original auto show Fahrenheits wore more lustrous Lamborghini paint—and the special add-ons are limited to some stitching, new wheels, a couple of throw-in options like heated seats, and a serial number. Woo-fricking-hoo. It costs almost three grand more than a base GLI, but drives the same—though nicely, I must admit. Spend that extra dough on suspension upgrades.

TOM ADAMS

This is a special edition of the special edition Jetta. The wheel says #4 of 1200! There are cues that allude to its specialness, but VW should have gone all the way. Contrast stitching on the wheel and shifter, but not on the seats. C'mon VW, make a bold move! (Apologies to Ford.) The audio system had something I haven't seen in a while: tone control knobs. No menus hiding the bass and treble settings. That seems to fit will in this uncomplicated cockpit. No geegaws to clutter up the interface. There's no doubt this is an entry-level car, but its sporty suspension and kick-in-the-pants thrust could fool you. I like how it sprints through traffic and takes corners like Rickey Henderson. It's comfortable, but not so spacious inside; I'd like to see a Passat GLI. The Jetta is a well-thought-out, basic sedan. I'd be too lazy to tune a cheap car, so I appreciate that VW has done it for me.
