Introduction

For people who regard an automobile as a place they have to be while getting from point A to point B, driver involvement is probably low on the list of buying traits, and comfort and self-indulgence undoubtedly rank high. And in these areas, the latest ES350—with its cushy suspension, low-effort steering, exceptionally quiet operation, outstanding audio, and upscale appointments—ranks high.

This is not to say the ES350 is totally docile. Its redesign for the 2007 model year included a six-speed automatic transmission, a displacement increase from 3.3 to 3.5 liters for its V-6 engine, and a big increase in horsepower from 218 to 272. As in previous incarnations, the ES employs the same foundations as the Toyota Camry, and most of the dimensions are identical save for length, where Lexus puts an extra 1.9 inches to work in an agreeably roomy and airy cabin. Increased size and sound isolation show up at the scales, though, where the ES350 weighs in a couple hundred pounds heavier than a V-6 Camry.

Unlike most of the rest of the Lexus sedan lineup, the ES350 does not offer a hybrid variant. But it does offer quietly stylish good looks, loads of technology, a posh interior, and an exceptionally serene driving experience.

Verdict

There’s little playful spirit in this fifth-generation ES. The steering is numb, body roll is abundant in hard cornering, and braking performance is so-so. If you don’t care about driving enjoyment and isolated luxury is what you seek, the ES fills the bill.

What’s New for 2008

With plenty of power to propel it through one more model year and a major redesign, Lexus has confined the ES350’s 2008 updates to revised side mirrors and the addition of reading lamps for the outboard rear-seat passengers.
