Introduction

Value—lots of goodies baked into a low price—has been the fundamental appeal of Hyundai automobiles since they first made their appearance in the U.S. market. High quality and strong performance have become part of the company’s image only recently, however, and the front-drive Sonata sedan is an excellent example.

Created to compete on equal footing with the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord—the gold standard cars of the mid-size segment—the latest Sonata, which was renewed for the 2006 model year, gives a respectable account of itself in terms of fit and finish, as well as attractive pricing. More surprising, it stacks up well in dynamic areas as well, as it’s relatively quick in V-6 trim (our long-term car proved as quick as 6.7 seconds to 60) and finished ahead of a Camry in a seven-car comparison test. And we were also thoroughly impressed with the Sonata’s trouble-free operation during the course of a 40,000-mile long-term evaluation.

Verdict

It may not be the absolute best mid-size sedan, but it’s arguably the best buy. We’d stop short of giving the Sonata a high fun-to-drive index, but value plus respectable road manners and solid assembly is a tough combination to ignore.
