How to Remove the Side Window Glass on a GMC Van

The large side windows in GMC vans are useful for seeing your way through traffic and maneuvering through parking lots, but they also make a large portion of the vehicle breakable. If the side window becomes cracked, it needs to be removed. GMC makes several styles of vans. The different models may have slight variations in how the side window is held in place. But the method outlined below focuses on the side window that is mounted in the GMC Cargo vans.

Things You'll Need

  • Putty knife
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Assistant
  • Gloves
  • Remove the rubber gasket from around the window with a putty knife. Start prying the rubber gasket away, where the two ends of the gasket meet.

  • Remove the clamps that hold the piece of glass against the inside wall of the van with a Phillips head screwdriver. Remove the clamps at the top of the glass first, to prevent the glass from slipping out before you're ready. Set the clamps and screws aside.

  • Examine the edge of the glass for silicone sealant. Some models have silicone around the edge of the glass, and others don't. If the silicone is present, remove it with the putty knife while an assistant supports the glass.

  • Pivot the glass against the bottom edge of the window and lean the top edge of the glass out. Slide gloved hands down the side of the glass until you can take a hold of the piece and lift it out of the window.
