How to Replace the Window and the Regulator of a Land Cruiser

If the door on your Land Cruiser becomes damaged you may need to replace both the window and the window regulator. This is usually a job that should be carried out by a professional mechanic, but if you have basic auto repair knowledge and want to save some money, you can do the work yourself. You can obtain the tools and components from an auto parts store. In some cases, however, you may need to order the glass through your local Toyota dealership.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Hex wrench
  • Work gloves
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Window regulator
  • Window glass
  • Open up the door of your vehicle. If it is difficult to open, you will have to reach it by entering another door. Slide the seat that's next to the door all the way back, and fully recline the backrest.

  • Locate the mounting screws for the armrest, stereo speaker and the interior door panel. Remove them with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Lift the components from the door and place them aside in a secure spot along with their screws.

  • Move the window regulator to its lowest point within the access panel of the door. This will facilitate the removal process.

  • Use a hex wrench to remove the bolts connecting the glass window and the window regulator. Set the hex bolts aside in a safe spot. Lift the pane of glass out of the door frame. If the glass is cracked or broken, wear heavy work gloves to protect your hands.

  • Remove the mounting bolts for the regulator with an adjustable wrench and remove the regulator from the door. Install the new regulator in the door frame and secure it in place with the mounting bolts. Slide the new glass pane into the frame and align it with the window regulator. Reattach the hex bolts with the hex wrench. Reinstall the interior door panel, stereo speaker and armrest.
