A four-wheel drive 1995 Ford F-150 pickup came equipped with either automatic locking front hubs or manually locking front hubs. Manually locking hubs require the owner to get out of the vehicle and turn a knob in the center of the wheel with their hands to lock the front axles and then engage four-wheel drive mode. If these manual locking hubs fail, then you won't be able to lock the hubs to engage four-wheel drive. To fix that, you need to change out the hubs, which takes around an hour or so to do.
Park the F-150 on a level surface and apply the parking brake. Sit in front of one of the front wheels so that you're facing the hub in the center of the wheel.
Remove the cap from the hub with the 3/8-inch ratchet and the hex-head sockets. Look inside the hub and find the circular snap ring on the axle shaft. Remove the snap ring with the snap ring pliers. Pull the hub body off the axle with your hands.
Slide the replacement manually locking hub assembly into the axle and secure it in place with the factory snap ring and the snap ring pliers. Install the cap onto the hub with the 3/8-inch ratchet and the hex-head sockets. Then torque the hub cap bolts to 30 to 50 foot-pounds using the 3/8-inch torque wrench and the hex-head sockets.
