How to Remove the Alternator From a Corolla

The alternator on a Toyota Corolla creates electricity that the vehicle uses to power the lights, engine components, as well as charge the battery. Over time, the bearings inside the alternator can wear down. When they do, the alternator can either seize up or stop working completely. Then the vehicle will not be able to run properly until the alternator is removed to be replaced or rebuilt. In this case, the project vehicle is a 2005 Toyota Corolla, but the process is similar for other editions of Corolla.

Things You'll Need

  • Open-end wrench set
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Pop the hood. Locate the battery on the fender well. Remove the negative connection on the battery with a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and then do the same for the positive connection.

  • Locate the alternator adjusting bolt on the alternator. Loosen the lock nut with the open-end wrench and then loosen the adjusting bolt with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket until the belt is slack enough that you can pull it off the alternator pulley.

  • Unbolt the electrical connection on the alternator with the open-end wrench. Unplug the harness on the alternator with your hands. Unbolt the alternator from the engine cradle with the ratchet. Remove the alternator from the Corolla's engine bay.
