How to Replace the Starter on a Hyundai XG350

Replacing the starter on the Hyundai XG350 is much the same as any other automobile. When you go to start the car and you hear a rapid clicking sound, or possibly even nothing at all happens, you most likely need to replace the starter. It is not a difficult project. Someone with no experience working on automobiles could install the new starter in about an hour and a half. This can save you a lot of money on labor costs at a repair garage.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench set
  • Automobile jack
  • Jack stand
  • Wheel chocks
  • Socket set
  • Masking tape
  • Marker
  • Open the engine compartment of the Hyundai, and disconnect the negative ("-") battery cable using a wrench. Place the wheel chocks behind the rear wheels of the Hyundai. Raise the car on the driver side using the automobile jack. Place a jack stand under the car near the jacking point, and raise it to the frame.

  • Crawl underneath the car, and locate the starter close to the transmission. Disconnect the speedometer and shift control cables using a wrench. Label the electrical wires on the starter using the marker and masking tape. Disconnect the wires using a wrench. Unplug the wiring harness from the starter.

  • Remove the mounting bolts from the starter using a socket and ratchet. Take care when removing the last one that the starter does not fall on you. Pull the starter away from the engine. Place a new starter on the engine, and tighten the mounting bolts with the socket and ratchet. Connect the electrical wires, and secure them with a wrench.

  • Jack up the car and remove the jack stand from under the Hyundai. Lower the car to the ground. Start the Hyundai to test the new starter.
