How do I Change the Starter Solenoid in a 2002 Toyota Camry?

Toyota had the do-it-yourself repair person in mind when they designed the 2002 Toyota Camry. They made it easy to replace small parts like the starter solenoid. Unlike most manufacturers that mount the starter solenoid to the top of the starter, they mounted it on the side. This makes easy access for the solenoid without removing the starter from the engine.

Things You'll Need

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with an adjustable wrench.

  • Find the starter. It is next to the transmission cross member on the lower left side of the engine.

  • Remove the two bolts that secure the solenoid to the starter. Use the adjustable wrench or a 9/16-inch wrench.

  • Pull up on the secure tab that holds the wring harness onto the solenoid. Pull the harness out of the solenoid.

  • Connect the new solenoid to the wiring harness and push down on the secure tab.

  • Bolt the new solenoid to the starter, using the adjustable wrench or 9/16-inch wrench.
