The starter on your 2005 Honda Odyssey generates the rotation to start the engine running. When your starter is failing, you may notice that your van is starting hard or not starting at all. The starter on the 2005 Odyssey is directly behind the battery in the engine compartment and can be accessed easily from above the engine. Buy a new starter for your Odyssey from an auto parts store or Honda dealership.
Disconnect the negative battery cable using a socket and ratchet. Secure the battery cable away from the terminal on the battery to avoid accidental contact.
Disconnect the wiring harness from the starter by pressing the retaining clip and pulling the connector straight out of the starter.
Disconnect the feed wire to the starter by sliding the protective boot down and removing the retaining nut with a 17 millimeter socket and ratchet. Pull the wire off the stud and set it aside.
Remove the two mounting bolts that secure the starter to the mounting plate using a 17 millimeter socket and ratchet. You may need an extension to reach the bolts. Support the starter motor carefully when removing the mounting bolts so that the starter does not fall.
Position the new starter in the same position as the one you removed. Secure the starter in place by installing the two mounting bolts. Torque the upper mounting bolt to 33 pound-feet and the lower mounting bolt to 47 pound-feet with your torque wrench.
Reconnect the wiring harness by pressing the connector straight into the connector on the starter body. Install the feed wire on the stud and secure it with the retaining nut. Torque the retaining nut to 7 pound-feet with your torque wrench.
Reconnect the negative battery cable and tighten the connection with a socket and ratchet.
