How to Replace an ABS Controller in a Saturn VUE

The Saturn VUE has an anti-lock braking system (ABS) controller that reduces the braking force to any wheel that is rotating significantly more slowly than the others. This prevents the brakes from locking during an emergency stop. You may need to replace the ABS controller if the ABS warning light comes on although this does not necessarily make your vehicle unsafe to drive.

Things You'll Need

  • New ABS controller
  • Socket wrench set
  • Torque wrench
  • Determine which ABS controller your Saturn VUE will need. You'll want to be sure the new controller is compatible with your make and model of VUE. ABS is offered on all versions of the Saturn VUE.

  • Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and clean the area between the ABS controller and brake pressure modulator valve of any dirt and debris.

  • Disconnect the electrical connector for the ABS controller and pump motor. Remove the mounting screws for the ABS controller with a socket wrench. Separate the ABS controller from the modulator valve by carefully pulling the two units apart. Clean the sealing surface of the modulator valve with denatured alcohol.

  • Install the ABS controller onto the modulator valve. Replace the mounting screws for the ABS controller. Use a torque wrench to tighten the screws in an X pattern to 27 inch lbs. Connect the electrical connectors for the pump motor and ABS controller.

  • Turn the ignition switch to the ON position but do not start the engine. Check to see if the ABS light is on. Possible causes include a weak battery, dirty or loose battery cables or open fuses. Aftermarket electronic devices can also cause the ABS light to come on.
