In 1987 AMC introduced the Jeep Wrangler to replace the older CJ series. In 1988 Chrysler bought the Jeep line and continues to produce the off-road vehicle today. Older Jeep Wranglers require their owners to maintain them properly to ensure off-road reliability.
Using an improper grade of engine oil can cause low oil pressures. Engine overheating is another symptom of improper grades of engine oil. Drain and replace the engine oil with the grade specified by the Jeep's service manual. Replace the oil filter at the same time.
Dirty engine oil clogs oil filters and passages. These clogs prevent the oil from reaching critical areas of the engine. Low oil pressures may result from clogs. Drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter. Inspect the filter for clogs or sludge.
Using an engine oil pressure test kit, test the amount of pressure generated by the oil pump. If the oil pressure test kit indicates that the oil pump generates pressures within the specifications for the engine type, the problem may be the Jeep's oil pressure gauge. If the pressures are not within the service manual's specifications, the oil pump may be worn.
