Problems With Monte Carlo SS Power Door Locks

The Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS, a two-door coupe available with either a V-6 or V-8 engine, was manufactured from 1970 to 2007. The Super Sport (SS) is a higher performance option originally introduced by Chevrolet in 1961. Despite its increased performance level, multiple fifth and six generation (1995 to 2007) Monte Carlo SS models suffer from power door lock problems.

Problem

  • Chevrolet technical service bulletins (TSBs) indicate the intermittent lock failure is a common problem with Monte Carlo models. Customers report the power lock feature is unreliable and sometimes fails completely.

Warnings

  • TSBs indicate that customers report that the power lock function "operates slowly" prior to failure. Aside from slowly operating locks, you may hear a "groaning" noise when operating the power lock feature.

Solution

  • Slowly operating locks and excessive noise are examples of power door lock actuator failure, which is the component responsible for locking and unlocking the doors. In addition to examining the door lock actuator, a professional should check the door lock circuit to see if it is faulty as well.
