Truck Clutch Problems

The truck clutch can succumb to the same problems as that of any other vehicle. However, due to design, a truck clutch may be more durable and last longer than a manual transmission.

Clutch Slip

  • As a truck clutch begins to wear out and fail, you may feel some slippage as it engages and disengages. The clutch function allows you to shift gears without damaging the engine. If the clutch doesn't work right, the gear shifting will be abrupt or will pop between gears.

Premature Wear

  • Particularly with manual transmissions, if you are not used to working a manual shift system, incorrect driving can cause premature damage. This human effect becomes most evident in used vehicles, which can wear down quickly as a result of this abuse.

Clutch Noise

  • Generally, a working clutch should not make a whole lot of noise. If your clutch starts to make whirring sounds that change volume when you use or engage it, the throwout bearing may have begun to fail. This bearing allows the clutch to release the engaged gear for shifting.
