My Power Steering Makes a Creaky Sound When I'm Making a Turn

Power steering systems usually emit a light hissing sound when turning the wheel. But louder noises, such as creaking or squealing sounds, signal a warning that the power steering system needs attention.

Fluid Levels

  • First, check the fluid level in the power steering fluid reservoir. It usually has a small dipstick underneath the cap for this purpose. If the fluid is below minimum, add power steering fluid to bring the level back up to normal. Do not add fluid unless the dipstick level is below minimum.

Considerations

  • Squealing or creaking sounds when turning the wheel all the way to one side also warrant a check of the power steering belt, preferably by a qualified mechanic. Old belts may need replacing while newer ones may need tightening or other adjustments.

Warning

  • Power steering fluid doesn't get used up, so it's unusual to need to fill the reservoir. If it gets low more than twice a year, take the vehicle to your mechanic. An empty power steering pump gets damaged quickly and can be costly to replace.
