How to Tell if Shocks Are Bad

Shocks are mounted on almost anything with wheels. Shocks absorb the bumps in the road for a smooth ride. Shocks should be replaced every 75,000 miles. However, if you notice a decrease in ride quality, you may have a bad shock before then. You can test whether your shocks are good or bad very quickly yourself. No tools are required to perform this procedure, and it can be done at any time.

  • Press up and down on the back bumper with your hands to get the vehicle bouncing.

  • Let go of the vehicle and observe its momentum. If the vehicle continues to bounce up and down for more than two seconds, the rear shocks need to be replaced.

  • Repeat these steps for the front bumper to determine the quality of the front shocks.
