Grand Am Start Problems

The Grand Am has a variety of things that can go wrong with the Pontiac which will cause the automobile not to start. Everything from major starting problems, such as a bad fuel pump, to something minor such as the car being out of fuel. Problems with the fuel system, electrical system or even filtering can create a start problem in the Grand Am.

Battery Problems

  • According to Carcomplaints.com one of the biggest problems with the 2001 Grand Am not starting came from different electrical problems. A battery can easily go dead at any moment, especially during colder months. The Grand Am will only need to be jump started with battery cables to fix this starting problem. Another start problem with the Grand Am can come from the battery cables being corroded which would prevent voltage from the battery to reach the starter on the Grand Am. The battery cables need to be removed and cleaned to eliminate this starting problem.

Starter Problems

  • The Grand Am will also have a starting problem if the starter fails. The starter is the unit on the Grand Am which engages when the ignition is turned and it in turn starts the engine. At times the starter problems are not because the starter is bad, but because the solenoid on the starter is bad. A Grand Am owner can remove both the solenoid and starter since the components are attached to each other, take the components to the local auto parts store to have them tested to see which one is bad. A sure sign that the starter is bad on the Grand Am is when the operator turns the ignition switch and a clicking sound can be heard.

Fuel System Problems

  • The Grand Am will not start if there is a fuel system problem. The automobile can be out of gas or gas isn't being sent to the injectors preventing the Grand Am from starting. The fuel filter can become clogged over time and prevent gas from flowing through the fuel line and into the engine. One of the major problems can come from fuel pump failure on the Grand Am. The fuel pump pushes gasoline from the gas tank through the fuel filter and into the fuel injectors allowing the Grand Am to start. When the fuel pump fails, gasoline is not pushed through the fuel line.
