How to Troubleshoot the Electrical System in a Hyundai Sonata

The Hyundai Sonata is great little family sedan that provides a decent ride. The electrical system seems to keep getting better with each year. However, people who have held onto their Sonata for awhile or bought a used one may have to troubleshoot the occasional electrical problem.

  • Scan your Hyundai's computer system any time the check engine light comes on in order to get the problem code. Something caused the check engine to light up, and the problem code is your car's way of telling you what ails it. A dealer or auto parts store should be able to do the scan for you. Check out the meaning at the Hyundai Webtech site.

  • Test for a spark if your car suddenly stops while you're driving. If you just bought the car (new or used), there may be an alarm system at work. Otherwise, look at the crank sensor and replace if needed.

  • Investigate the power lock relays if you can't unlock the locks with the remote (and the remote battery is good). These relays are located behind the dash in the Hyundai Sonata.

  • Disconnect the battery cable to reset your Sonata computer system if warning lights don't go off after the repair. They should do this on their own, but sometimes don't. Write down sound system presets before disconnecting the battery, because you'll need to reset them after interrupting power.

  • Perform a regular check of wires and connectors when you're doing maintenance work. If you spot torn insulation, corrosion or loose connections, you're looking at an impending electrical problem if you don't have one already. Bad wires should be replaced or at the very least, electrical tape applied over torn insulation. Tighten connectors and clean corrosion from connectors and posts to keep your Sonata running well.
