Take a shot at trying to troubleshoot air conditioning problems in your Mercury Villager before making a costly and time-consuming trip to the dealer or a mechanic. Sometimes air conditioning problems in an automobile can be a quick and simple fix.
Start the car and turn the air conditioning on. Allow the engine to run a few minutes so the air can cool. If the air runs okay but does not get cold, check underneath the vehicle for a pool of green-blue liquid which indicates a coolant leak.
Adjust the climate controls next. If they seem to work fine but have no effect on the air then the problem is probably as easy as a blown fuse. If the controls do not feel right, then the problem is probably with the control panel. If you cannot hear the usual blowing sound that accompanies the air then the problem is likely with the blower motor.
Find the fuse box in a Mercury Villager on the driver's side. It is below and to the left of the steering wheel near the brake. You will have to use the fuse guide on the inside of the fuse box cover to locate the exact fuse but it will be brown in color.
Disconnect the black negative battery cable before looking at the control panel. Find the ashtray and cup holder in the center of the dashboard and release the two tabs to remove it.
Remove the four pin-type retainers and remove the console cover. Remove the instrument panel by removing the screws. Disconnect the cigarette lighter electrical connector. Unscrew the control panel, pull it out enough to unplug the electrical connection and remove it.
Remove the glove box to get to the blower motor in a Mercury Villager. Unbolt the brace holding the instrument panel in place. Disconnect the AC hose which attaches to the left side of the motor, and the electrical connection. Remove the three screws holding the motor in place and pull it out.
