How to Fix the Windshield Wiper Linkage on a 2004 Chevy Silverado

The windshield wiper linkage on a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado is part of the windshield wiper module located under the air inlet grill in front of the windshield. The linkage is connected to the wiper motor arm by mechanical means, while the opposite end of the wiper linkage is attached to the wiper arm gear by means of a plastic bushing. The bushing is pressed into the linkage and snaps on the gear arm. This bushing becomes worn and separates easily from the wiper arm gear.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Small flat-head screwdriver
  • Ratchet
  • Socket set
  • Torque wrench
  • Wiper arm removal tool
  • Wiper linkage bushing removal and installation tool
  • Tape

Removal

  • Lift the concealment cover off the windshield wiper arm attachment point using a small flat-head screwdriver. Place a small piece of tape on the windshield at the tip of each wiper blade. This aids in proper placement when installed. Remove the wiper arm nut using a socket and ratchet.

  • Lift the wiper arm off using the wiper arm removal tool. Lay the wiper arm on the air intake cowl until the cowl is raised enough to detach the washer hose under the cowl. Remove the Phillips screws on both outside edges of the cowl. Lift up the plastic trim fasteners using the small flat-head screwdriver.

  • Remove the clips along the front outside edge of the cowl. Lift the cowl and detach the washer hoses. Remove the cowl and wiper arms from the vehicle. Remove the three bolts securing the wiper motor to the body using a socket and ratchet. Lift the wiper module and detach the electrical connector.

  • Press the wiper linkage bushing out using the bushing remover tool. Press a new bushing into the linkage using the same tool. Press the linkage with the new bushing on the wiper arm gear until it snaps in place.

Installation

  • Position the wiper module in the air intake cowl recess. Plug in the wiper motor connector. Install the wiper module retaining bolts and torque them to 9 foot-pounds. Place the cowl in position and connect the washer hoses.

  • Install the trim fasteners in the cowl. Install the Phillips screws in the ends of the cowl and torque them to 18 foot-pounds. Install the forward edge clips on the cowl.

  • Align the wiper arms with the tape on the windshield and press the arm down on the gear. Install the nut and torque it to 22 foot-pounds. Install the concealment cap.
