The charcoal canister on Toyota cars and trucks is an emission control device that is meant to trap excess gasoline vapors from the vehicle's gas tank. The canister is mounted underneath the Toyota near the gas tank. Aside from the clamp that holds the canister in place, and the connections that attach to it, the charcoal canister is sold as a single part and does not have any removable or serviceable parts. If the charcoal canister goes bad, the entire unit should be swapped out.
Park the Toyota on a flat surface and engage the emergency brake.
Jack up the rear end of the Toyota and position jack stands underneath it. Lower the Toyota down on the jack stands.
Remove the gas line from the end of the charcoal canister with a pair of pliers. The line is held in place by a plastic clamp. Squeeze the ends of the clamp with the pliers and then slide the hose off.
Remove the electrical connector to the old charcoal canister with the screwdriver.
Unbolt the retaining bolt holding the charcoal canister and bracket in place with the wrench.
Unscrew the old bracket from the underside of the Toyota and place a new one in its place. Insert the retaining screw and tighten it with a screwdriver. Slip the new charcoal canister into the new bracket and replace the retaining bolt with a wrench
Screw the electrical connection onto the new charcoal canister and replace the gas line with the pliers.
Jack up the Toyota slightly, remove the jack stands and then lower the jack.
